Calgary International Blues Festival (2015)
Based in Calgary, AB, the Mercurians are comprised of four talented musicians who are well-known on the local scene. Each winners in the 2015 CBMA Awards, guitarist Brett Spaulding, bassist Curtis Cripps, keyboard man Corbie Dorner and drummer Kent MacRae were selected by the public in the online vote as their favourite musicians. Together their sound is authentic blues-rock and they've been making a splash in clubs around the city.
Bass Player of the Year - Curtis Cripps
Originally from Ontario and making his home in Calgary for many years, Curtis has worked with a host of locals, including spending a decade with Bill Dowey & the Blues Devils in the King Eddy house band. He's also shared stage with Billy Branch, Cleveland Fats, Roy Gaines, Trevor Finlay, Sherman Doucette, Jason Buie, Sonny Rhodes and Johnny V. Curtis is currently with the Rustic Brothers.
Guitar Player of the Year - Brett Spaulding
Founder/creator of the Psychic Spies and familiar face on the Calgary scene, singer/songwriter/guitarist Brett has also played in the Donald Ray Johnson Band, ALittle Voodoo, The Silvertone Devils, and is currently in the Mike Clark Band. Brett anticpates releasing his CD of originals in fall of 2015.
Drummer of the Year - Kent McRae
A first choice drummer in both live and recording settings, Kent has a wide a long list of credits that speak to his versatility, from working with Barrage, a violin based world beat group, to spending time in Mike Watson's 6L6s, the McKinley Matters Band, the Psychic Spies, and a host of others.
Keyboard Player of the Year - Corbie Dorner
A well rounded player, Corbie toured with country band that opened for Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Bellamy Brothers and the Good Brothers, among others. He studied jazz piano at Grant MacEwan College and completed a Bachelors in Music degree in Jazz Studies N.S. Once he gained his degree, Corbie relocated to Calgary and worked with Mike Clark in groups featuring guitar legends such as Johnny V and Amos Garrett, recently traveling to Memphis for the IBC. Corbie is currently a teacher in Springbank.
