Singing the Blues Vocal Camp
Workshop

The annual Singing the Blues Vocal Camp is a two-part workshop for local blues singers of all skill levels.

Vocal Camp participants will take a master class from professional voice coach Elsie Osborne and an accompanist, learning about stage presence, mic technique, and how to interact with musicians.

Camp participants must be ages 18+

Singers perform before a live audience backed by local greats for this performance. A panel formed by industry professionals will offer constructive advice for singers. The top singer will be selected to go on to perform at the Calgary International Blues Festival in August.

Kat Danser's music navigates a paddle steamer from the muddy banks of the Mississippi Delta downriver toward a big ol' full moon over New Orleans. Dubbed 'Queen of the Swamp Blues', this Edmonton-based guitar slinger, songsmith, and blazing vocalist channels the spirit of roots, blues and gospel music pioneers. Among her many credits, accolades include the Blues Underground Network's Ambassador of the Blues Award, the International Blues Challenge Semi-Finalist for Best Independent Blues Album, Top 5 Albums of 2014 (Blues Underground Network), her third WCMA Award nomination for Spiritual Recording of the Year, Top 11 Albums of 2013 (CBC Radio) and a Maple Blues Award nomination for Best New Artist of the Year. A Walk Through Blues History

As well as being an award-winning artist, Kat Danser is also a nationally award winning scholar and has presented at conferences throughout North America. She holds a Masters in Musicology from the University of Alberta and has completed her PhD coursework toward a full doctorate in Musicology specializing in blues and roots music in the American South.

Kat combines her performance and education skills to assist community building through the arts. Toward that end, Danser is the Artist in Residence at the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts (Calgary), facilitates music and healing at the U-School Program for Marginalized Youth, Foothills Youth Psychiatric School, and instructs her own Music Education Program from elementary schools to adult instructional camps. Danser's primary goal is to use music as a space for personal exploration and as a method to strengthen communities.

CBMA Blues Awards & Twilight Blues Jam

Calgary Blues Music Association (CBMA) is committed to fostering, preserving and furthering blues music and musicians, as well as presenting some of the finest blues to be found anywhere on the planet.

Based on the results of a public vote, CBMA will honour local and regional artists who have dedicated their careers to blues music during the annual CBMA Blues Awards, and honour one artist with an induction into Hall of Fame Awards ceremony.

The annual Midwinter Bluesfest Twilight Blues Jam will follow the awards ceremony. Hosted by Alittle Voodoo, be sure to bring your axe and perform with some of the finest musicians in the city!

Guitarist, singer and Producer Jeff Jensen has quickly taken the blues scene by storm. His debut release, Road Worn & Ragged, received a Blues Blast Awards nomination in the Sean Costello Rising Star category, while his latest, Morose Elephant, has led to the band's European tour, dates across North America, and breaking into the Canadian market. As good as they are, Jeff Jensen's recordings do not prepare you for the first time you experience his live show, where the music transforms him into a whirling dervish and his blistering guitar runs and boundless energy tear up the stage.

2015 marked Savoy Brown's 50th year as pack-leaders of the British blues scene. Savoy Brown band members came and went, but guitarist Kim Simmonds stuck thrillingly to his guns and reaped the rewards, performing in iconic venues like Carnegie Hall and the Fillmore East and West, releasing more than 30 albums, and later enjoying a well-deserved induction into Hollywood's Rock Walk Of Fame.

Partnering with ATP and One Yellow Rabbit's High Performance Rodeo, Calgary Blues Music Association is pleased to present as opener for Savoy Brown, the winner of the Youth Blues Challenge, held in conjunction with ATP's " Life, Death & the Blues" presentation, January 19 - 31, 2016. CBMA is pleased to present The Deluxe in their debut festival performance.
