Singing the Blues Vocal Camp Workshop

The annual Singing the Blues Vocal Camp is a two-part workshop for local blues singers of all skill levels.

Vocal Camp participants will take a master class from professional vocalist
Sherry Kennedy to learn about stage presence, mic technique, and how to interact with musicians. Pianist Debra Marie Powers will accompany the class.

Camp participants must be ages 16+

Midwinter Volunteer Bash

Join the CBMA volunteers for some good cheer following the Vocal Camp Workshop! Kick off the Midwinter Bluesfest with those who make it all happen. Local blues great John Rutherford will perform.

Singers perform before a live audience backed by the Vernon Wills Band with special guest Debra Marie Powers . A panel formed by master vocalists Sherry Kennedy, Marie Bridge and Cindy McLeod will offer constructive advice for singers. The top singer will be selected to go on to perform at the Calgary International Blues Festival in August.

Fruteland Jackson is one of the few American artists dedicated to performing and preserving acoustic blues in its various styles, both traditional and contemporary, from field hollers and work songs to Delta and Piedmont styles. Fruteland refers to himself as a " Blues Activist " and oral historian, promoting awareness through education by conducting Blues in the Schools programs. The Blues Foundation has recognized Fruteland’s contributions by presenting him with the Keeping the Blues Alive award. Presented in partnership with Pro Arts Society

John Rutherford hosts the King Eddy Nights, a walk through blues history and some of its foremost figures. Joining John for a night of blues history is Fruteland Jackson, who will share his encyclopedic knowledge of the blues forefathers and the history of blues in Canada and North America. Presented in partnership with National Music Centre.

Calgary Blues Music Association (CBMA) is committed to fostering, preserving and furthering blues music and musicians, as well as presenting some of the finest blues to be found anywhere on the planet.

Based on the results of a public vote, CBMA will honour local and regional artists who have dedicated their careers to blues music during the 6th annual CBMA Blues Hall of Fame Awards ceremony.

The annual Midwinter Bluesfest Twilight Blues Jam will be hosted by the VW Band. Bring your axe and perform with some of the finest musicians in the city!
